Best essential oils for travelling

Over the last few years, we have seen a movement of people becoming more aware of the benefits of a holistic lifestyle. Indeed more of us are choosing to come away from using chemicals and processed foods for a more natural way of living which is better for our health and the planet. With this movement, many of us are now more aware of the benefits of essential oils and are using them in our homes to support our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

But did you know that essential oils can also help to improve your travel experience? There are many elements to travelling that essential oils can help with.  They are useful for helping with anxiety, motion sickness, headaches, and many other ailments which travelers may experience, including those when they get to their destination such as jetlag.

Here are some of my favorites essential oils for travelling, and tips on how you can use them.

Lavender French essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

My personal favorites, not only does it smell amazing but it is so useful and can be used for almost every ailment.  It is an analgesic so it is useful to help ease aches, pains, and headaches. It is also anti-bacterial and helps fight infections, helps with healing wounds and is a sedative for insomnia, aids with relaxation and much more. Lavender is great for helping the skin heal & regenerate and makes an excellent addition to aloe vera gel for sunburn. You can use this oil using any of the methods above and is a must-have addition to any traveler’s suitcase!

Peppermint essential oil

One of my favorite oils for travel as it has many uses.  It can help with upset tummies. Simply add 2-3 drops on the corner of your pillowcase to help soothe you whilst you rest, or on a flannel placed on a radiator or fan to help the oil circulate the room, can really help to calm the stomach. This oil can also be used in your car on an air freshener to help with on-the-go calming

Citronella essential oil

Is great for repelling insects. If you live in a warm climate, you’ve probably seen all the citronella candles which are available to buy or come out during summer. However, I have found placing a few drops of the essential oil in the room is more effective and helps deter unwanted visitors. I find this very useful during summer or when travelling home to Sri Lanka where mosquitos can be a nuisance.

If you are using it while outdoors simply add 2–3 drops to cotton balls and place them strategically around the outdoor area or add a few drops to a tissue placed in a top pocket. This oil is also useful for helping to relieve fatigue, jetlag, headaches and fever.

Lemongrass essential oil

Fantastic oil that helps with pain relief, and tiredness and acts as a sedative for the nerves. Very valuable for those who get anxious during travel. This uplifting oil can be inhaled from a tissue or from the corner of a handkerchief, throughout their journey.

Mandarin essential oil

Useful if you have children travelling with you as it is good for children’s digestive conditions, including nausea and constipation, as well as for insomnia and stress making this oil a must for any travelling parent. Dilute the oil into a cream or in a carrier oil, and apply to the stomach for digestive issues and nausea or to the lower back, massaging in a clockwork direction, for constipation.

For insomnia and stress inhalation is the best method, place a few drops on a tissue, or on the corner of the pillowcase.

Eucalyptus Smithii essential oil

Another useful oil when travelling with children. Traditionally used for coughs, colds and sinusitis due to its decongestant and anti-infectious properties this makes this oil a great air purifier, as well as being good for aches, pains and headaches. To use this oil to purify the air add 10 drops to a small spray bottle with water – shake well before use as oil and water don’t mix – to spray your linens and surfaces for a fresh and clean surrounding.

Tea Tree essential oil

A very useful oil for insect bites, bumps, scratches, and drying out pimples, just put a little oil on to make it shrink in size! The anti-fungal properties make it a great oil to add to any foot care routine you may have whilst out hiking. Simply add a few drops to your foot spa, cream or even to your socks to also help deodorize them.
