The different types of rest we need to help us function

For our last blog focusing on holistic self-care, we explore the different types of rest we need to help us function at our very best.

When we think of getting some rest the first thing that usually pops into our minds is some getting sleep or spending the day lounging about on the couch but the truth is there are different types of rest we need.

Rest is incredibly important for our mental and physical health, and did you know there are seven different types of rest that we need to stay healthy and functioning properly

Here are the different types of rest we need

The first type of rest I feel that should be in top of the list is physical rest.  This involves getting the recommend 7-8hours of sleep each night, as well as taking time to relax and reduce stress levels. Physical rest helps our bodies to repair and heal, allowing us to perform at our best.

I feel mental rest is equally important as we need to take breaks throughout the day to give our brains a break from constant stimulation. This can be done through simple activities like reading, listening to music, or meditating. Mental rest helps us to stay focused and productive.

Although it’s not something we think of we all need emotional rest, this involves taking time to connect and acknowledge our emotions and express them in a healthy way. Emotional rest allows us to process our feelings and understand them better.

Quite often we neglect our spiritual rest which is about connecting with our spiritual side, whether it’s through prayer, meditation, or spiritual practice. Spiritual rest helps us to stay connected to our values and stay grounded.

We all need a balance of time alone, and time with loved ones. Social rest is the time we spend connecting with friends and family, or do activities that make us feel connected to the world around us. Social rest helps us to stay connected to the people in our lives and find joy.

As an artist I can confirm that taking time out to express our creativity in whatever form it takes is equally important. We all have a creative side which needs to be let out to express itself. Creative rest helps us to stay inspired and express our inner creativity.

Have you ever sat outside and come away fleeing refreshed from just 5 minutes outdoors? Nature rest is the most frequent type of rest we need. A simple walk outdoors or sitting on a bench for just 15 minutes can do wonders. Take some time to get outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. Nature rest helps us to connect to the natural world, and ground and find peace.  I often find this is the best place to go when life makes you feel off-balanced.

I feel it is important to regularly check in with ourselves and evaluate how our week has been going, and what type of rest we need to give ourselves so we can refresh and revive ourselves.  Mindfully practicing holistic self-care is a great way to ensure you get the different types of rest your mind and body need. And the great part is it need not cost anything to practice self-care.

Holistic self-care in itself is a lifestyle change, it is a choice to form new habits that will continue to help us improve our overall well-being physically, mentally and spiritually.
