Why turmeric should be a staple in your kitchen and holistic self-care routine

For many around the world, a steaming mug of coffee is what starts their day, and for many years in my youth, I followed this same ritual. And the morning cuppa didn’t stop there often there was a mid-morning, and after-lunch coffee and at one point in my life, it even replaced my lunch.  Not only was this habit harder on my wallet than I realised, and it was also causing slumps in energy, triggering migraines and other problems.

When I started studying beauty therapy and then nutrition, I realised how much damage the excess caffeine was doing to my body and wanted to break out of this cycle. But what would replace that lovely ritual of a warm mug of liquid in my hand first thing in the morning? I loved the comfort of it, those moments of quiet when the rest of the world was still asleep and I sipped on my coffee. My mother suggested water therapy which she practices. So, I started to research the benefits and started experimenting.

I introduced small amounts of hot water and built myself up to a mug then I tried adding lemon juice or a slice of lemon. While this is recommended by many, I personally found it wasn’t for me, at least not on an empty tummy as it made me feel ill. Then I started reading up on turmeric and how it was often made into golden milk, but as I wanted to avoid dairy and wasn’t keen to have milk in the morning. The spice has always been a staple in my kitchen as I have used it in cooking and skincare preparations.  I tried the turmeric in my water and found that I didn’t mind it and have been doing this at least twice a week for the last ten years.

Turmeric has many health benefits and has been used in ayurvedic medicine for centuries, but it is important to note that turmeric should be pure and organic. The  plant is native to Southeast Asia and is a member of the Zingiberaceae, or ginger, family. It contains Curcumin which is proven to have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties

As per research here are 5 reasons to include turmeric in your holistic self-care journey

  1. Helps reduce arthritis symptoms.
  2. Boost immunity
  3. Research suggests that curcumin may help thin the blood, reduce cholesterol, and prevent the narrowing of arteries.
  4. It has been used in traditional medicines as a treatment for many digestive conditions.  suggests that the spice’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help modulate gut bacteria.
  5. Several studies suggest that curcumin can protect against liver damage.
